Open Call: ‘My Time’ Local Residency 2016

Fresh Milk is pleased to share, for the third year in a row, an open call for the ‘My Time’ Local Residency 2016.

Having again received generous support to make this residency possible, one Barbadian artist will be selected from this call to undertake a one-month residency at Fresh Milk, and will receive a stipend of $1,000.00 BBD towards their production costs. Visual artists working in a variety of disciplines (sculpture, installation, painting, drawing, performance, photography, new media, interdisciplinary) are invited to apply.

We are particularly interested this year in artists whose work reflects on culture, identity and place in ways which fall outside of stereotypical narratives, challenging the notion that culture must be read or represented in a singular way.

Emphasis on a cross-disciplinary approach to research and production is also an area we are interested in supporting; the selected artist will share the studio with an artist, researcher and educator whose work centres around the creation, presentation, promotion and facilitation of critical discourse around contemporary Pacific arts practice. This could be an exciting opportunity for collaboration or cross-pollination of ideas during the shared time on the platform.

Duration of Residency: 4 weeks

FRESH MILK will provide:

– A $1,000.00 BBD stipend to the artist
– Wireless internet
– A 15.5 x 14 ft studio space
– A wide expanse of rural land
– Access to the Colleen Lewis Reading Room on site
– A varied network of creatives to connect with including an international resident artist with whom the successful candidate will share the platform
– The option to participate in a public event showcasing the outcome of the residency

Eligibility criteria:

– Artist must be Barbadian
– Artist must not have taken part in an on-site Fresh Milk Residency within the last 2 years

Expectations of the Artist:

– Artist must come out to the studio a minimum of four days per week between Monday and Friday. Studio access is between 8 am and 6 pm
– Artist must supply their own materials and equipment
– Artist must complete some form of public outreach in relation to the work created during the residency (artist talk/presentation, workshop, exhibition, etc.)
– Artist will be required to keep a weekly blog of their activities and processes, and submit a report to Fresh Milk at the conclusion of the residency
– Artist will be required to donate a piece of work to the donor who made this residency possible

Application Process:

To be considered, please submit the following to freshmilkbarbados@gmail.com with the subject line ‘My Time Local Residency 2016 Proposal’:

– The completed application form which can be downloaded here (includes applicant’s contact information, an artist statement, and full residency proposal)
– An up to date Curriculum Vitae (CV)
– A numbered portfolio of 5-10 images (or 2-3 short videos as the case may be) of recent work
– An index of the portfolio pieces in numerical order, with the title, medium and date listed

Incomplete applications will not be considered.

The deadline for submission is March 28th, 2016. The residency must take place between June 6 – July 1, 2016.

Announcing the FRESH MILK ‘My Time’ Local Resident Artist 2015 – Simone Asia

Fresh Milk is very pleased to announce Barbadian artist Simone Asia as the winner of the Fresh Milk ‘My Time’ Local Residency prize for 2015. Congratulations Simone!

Simone’s one-month residency runs from Monday April 13 – Friday May 8, 2015. She sees this period as a “playground for opportunities,” a chance to experiment with surface, scale and technique. She will explore and respond organically to the environment at Fresh Milk to feed the current series of work she has been producing, which is inspired by dreams and reinterpretations of personal experiences.

About Simone Padmore:

Simone Padmore, also known as Simone Asia, is an illustrator who was born on May 2^nd, 1990 in Bridgetown, Barbados. From 2006-2011, Simone attended the Barbados Community College (BCC) where she received her Associate’s Degree in Visual Arts and her Bachelor’s of Fine Art. Attending BCC exposed Simone to many different art forms, techniques and experimentation where she developed a stronger sensibility for drawing and a love for pen and ink.

After college, Simone continued her independent practice and has exhibited in art shows, including The Place Between Here and There, an exhibition of contemporary Barbadian art taking place at The Frame & Art Co. between April 17 – May 16, 2015. She won an incentive award at NIFCA in 2011 and was featured in ARC Magazine, FuriaMag and Caribbean Beat, along with a few online fanzines.

Simone has participated in three residencies to date: a one week residency at Fresh Milk (Barbados) in 2012, one with Projects & Space (Barbados) and one with Alice Yard (Trinidad) in 2014.

Artist Statement:

As an artist, I want to have an honest connection with my work. I gravitate towards ideas about science, the universe, dreams, the mind and experiences. I seek to explore these ideas from a personal perspective, expressing them through very detailed, abstract drawings rendered by pen and ink. With these, I create an alternate reality; my hybrids within my own universe.

My use of detail is based on my belief that I have some type of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). My thoughts consume me and I also write a lot, often repetitively. I am very particular in my ways and at times I can be a bit of a perfectionist. The use of detail, however, is not specifically linked to any one series, but to the notion of being disciplined.

I illustrate this way because, even though it can be time consuming, it is a stress reliever. It puts me in a trance-like state where it eludes the concept of time. It also distracts me from my racing thoughts; it is my therapy.

Announcing the FRESH MILK ‘My Time’ Local Resident Artist 2014 – Cherise Ward

FRESH MILK is very pleased to announce Barbadian artist Cherise Ward as the winner of the Fresh Milk ‘My Time’ Local Residency prize for 2014. Congratulations Cherise!

Cherise’s one-month residency will begin on Monday April 14, 2014, and she will use her time to explore new ideas and directions in her practice, with an aim of producing a small book project and expanding on aspects of this book in various forms of sculpture, specifically puppetry, and designer toys.

About Cherise Ward:

Cherise Ward is an Illustrator living in Barbados. After completing her Associate Degree in Visual Arts at the Barbados Community College, Cherise received her BFA in Illustration from the School of Visual Arts in New York City.

Cherise’s work has been shown in exhibitions in America; including New York City, California, and Chicago, as well as in Barbados. Her illustrations have been published on the covers of graphic novels and the pages of children’s books. Cherise’s work is often inspired by nature and her love of fantasy and storytelling.

Artist Statement:

As an Illustrator, my work is often based on my interest in storytelling. This then takes many forms, from single narrative illustrations, to sequential (picture books or graphic novels), to sculpture. Whatever form it takes, at the core, my work is greatly inspired by an interest in telling stories, which has been my passion since childhood.

In my most recent body of personal work, my intent was to create narrative illustrations of original fairy tales, based on the flora and fauna of the Caribbean; that had the feel of the classic fairy tales I enjoy. Each illustration tells a story, but also invites the viewer to imagine a story of their own.

I build puppets, from sketching the character on paper, to sculpting, and putting together the parts so they can function. So along with illustration, I also use sculpture to bring my stories to life.
